Lajos Koltai’s feature film depicts a mysterious epidemic in 1847, raging in a maternity clinic in Vienna and decimating the women in labor. A Hungarian medical doctor, Ignaz Semmelweis, is determined to unravel the mystery of puerperal fever by going against all traditional theories.

Our eponym, Ignaz Semmelweis, is a real inspiration even today. It is no coincidence that in 1969, on the 200th anniversary of its foundation, Semmelweis University took his name. He is a role model to be followed by all doctors and medical professionals, all those who work in the health sector. In the apt words of Semmelweis, “however painful and overwhelming a realization may be, there is no antidote in denial.”
