Date:  November 23 - November 24
Time: 21:00
Location:  Hungarian House of New York
213 E 82nd St, New York, NY 10028

Organized by the Liszt Institute New York a unique performance by András Berecz and István Berecz entitled Like Father, Like Son will be presented at the Hungarian House of New York on November 23 at 4 PM.

The program explores what is passed down from father to son in a modern family without teaching or explanation, through example alone. Words teach, but examples inspire. Here, the set table, family celebrations, and togetherness are continuous opportunities for learning. The Hungarian House will host a show by András Berecz and István Berecz at 4 PM followed by a dance house and the music will be provided by the Fényes Band and the Holdvilág Band.

The event is supported by the Hungarian Academy of Arts.

"In the ’Like Father, Like Son’ program, we bring together dance, folk songs, storytelling, and piano music within a family setting. It is rare for these four dimensions to showcase the various facets of Hungarian culture side by side, rooted in tradition, collective culture, and high art—unfolding naturally, without any force, at home, during family celebrations. Perhaps this is the essence of the program: to show that these are all branches of the same root. They reach different corners of the mind and heart. When words alone are not enough, the song speaks. When even the human voice falls short, let the string or the hollow stick resound what the human voice can never convey—yet, it is a person behind it. When music is no longer enough, a person kicks away the chair, and with hands, feet, and body, begins to make music—thus, they dance." /András Berecz, Kossuth Prize-winning singer and storyteller/

About the performers

The Kossuth Prize-winning folk singer and storyteller inherited her craft from her mother in Kunhegyes, who, in turn, inherited it from her father, Gábor Tanka, the famous dancer, jokester, and folk singer. András Berecz’s first child, István, has not only embraced his father’s knowledge but has also expanded upon it.
