István Berecz and the Sarjú Band in New York

One of the most colorful personalities of the Hungarian folk dance scene, ISTVÁN BERECZ and competition-winning Hungarian folk music band THE SARJÚ BAND along with folk dancer DIANA SANTANA CADENA invite the audience for an evening of authentic Hungarian folk music and dance on the 29th of October at the Hungarian House in New York at 7pm.

ISTVÁN BERECZ is a well known figure of the Hungarian folk dance scene and an authentic educator of the dance styles of several ethnographic regions. He won the soloist folk dance category of the first internationally televised “Fölszállott a Páva” Hungarian Talent competition in 2012 and went on to become one of the judges, which is where he started working closely with the Sarjú Band. Additionally, he received the ́Eternal Golden Spur ́ National Folk Dance Soloist Award, the Prima Primissima Award, represented his nation and the Hungarian culture as a delegate at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival and appeared at the UNESCO Palace in Paris. As of 2015 he is the Folk Music Director of the Fonó Music House.

The 2021 US tour of István Berecz is supported by the Liszt Institute New York.

The SARJÚ BAND ́s young musicians from Budapest won the band of the year in 2016 as part of the “Fölszállott a Páva” National Hungarian Television Talent competition. Their mission is to study and preserve authentic Hungarian village folk music while striving to keep the legacies of the old masters from the villages alive on stage and in dance houses for generations to come.

DIANA SANTANA CADENA is an architectural artist of Hungarian and Ecuadorian descent and dances with the Bartók Folk Dance Ensemble of Budapest. In 2019 she received a Körösi Csoma Sándor scholarship from the Hungarian Government giving her the opportunity to share her talents with the New Jersey community.
