About Balassi Programmes

Through the Balassi Scholarship Programmes, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Hungary provides learning opportunities for foreigners interested in the Hungarian language and culture, as well as in Hungarian higher education. Our unique programmes offer a wide range of courses, so everyone can find the ones that suit them best.

We support students learning Hungarian studies at foreign universities with scholarships in Hungary. We also offer foreigners interested in translation opportunities to improve their Hungarian language skills and expand their professional experience and network. We offer opportunity those preparing for university studies in Hungary to strengthen their Hungarian language and subject knowledge. Young people of the Hungarian diaspora can expand their information about the Hungarian language and culture with the cooperation of highly qualified teachers. In addition to the one-year courses, the Balassi Summer University offers four weeks of intensive language learning and familiarization with Hungarian culture.

Throughout the studies provided by the Balassi Scholarship Programmes, the supportive atmosphere, extracurricular programmes and community building play a prominent role.

Students completed the trainings can get to know friends, and professional contacts in Budapest, who can even be a connection to Hungary, the Hungarian language and culture throughout their lives.

The purpose of the scholarships and the application deadline:
- in the Hungarian studies program, to enhance the Hungarian language skills and Hungarian studies knowledge of foreign Hungarian students and graduates interested in Hungary, Hungarian culture and Hungarian studies (capacity: 60 people) – application deadline: March 26, 2026;

- in the Hungarian studies program, to strengthen the identity of young people of Hungarian origin living in the Western diaspora (primarily in the countries of the northern hemisphere) through the development and deepening of their Hungarian language skills and knowledge of Hungary (capacity: 25 people) – application deadline: March 31, 2026;

- in the literary translation training, the development of the literary knowledge and Hungarian language skills of foreign citizens interested in and committed to Hungarian literature and literary translation, and their introduction to the practice of literary translation (capacity: 10 people) – application deadline: March 31, 2026.
