The goal of this grant opportunity is to help young translators start their careers and promote high-quality translation of non-fiction prose.

1. Target group for the call for submissions

The call is open to translators of non-fiction prose born after 1 February 1983. We can only accept submissions from natural persons, so we cannot consider submissions from companies or other legal entities.

2. Expectations

In the framework of the present grant opportunity, the applicant undertakes to translate into Hungarian a work in a foreign language which the translator considers important and popular, but which has not yet been published in Hungarian. The work to be translated may be a contemporary or classical non-fiction article, a fragment of a work, or a complete work in any field of the sciences. The article or excerpt must be at least 50 pages long (1,800 characters per page). Applicants can submit up to two translation proposals per person.

3. Amount available under the Call for Submissions

PKÜ will conclude a usage contract with the applicants whose submissions have been chosen for support, which will stipulate, among other things, that the applicant grants PKÜ a multiple, non-exclusive, non-terminable, non-territorial, non-transferable and non-sublicensable license for promotional use for the publication of the translated work or excerpt.

Award: gross award of HUF 300 000 per translation.

Remuneration is taxable income as defined in Act CXVII of 1995 on Personal Income Tax and is therefore subject to personal income tax.

4. Framework conditions of the call

The available budget is HUF 3 000 000 gross.

Deadline for submissions: 30 June 2023.

Please note that applications submitted after the deadline will be automatically excluded from the evaluation process. Applicants may submit supplemental materials up to the deadline specified in the notice regarding anything missing from the submission.

Notification of the outcome of the evaluation: 30 July 2023.

Deadline for the translation of the selected work or part of a work: 31 October 2023.

PKÜ reserves the right to modify the above dates in particularly justified cases and will publish a separate notice of this on its website.
