Where Rivers Run Wild - Aqua Hungarica (color, Hungarian nature film, 72 min, 2021)

Date: 1 August, 2021, 2-3.15pm
Location: Palm House

Hungary is the land of waters. In addition to the natural forces that converge at the foot of the Carpathians, time itself has shaped its hydrography. The flora and fauna that have evolved here fight the elements and human activity on a daily basis. In Hungary, where rivers have run wild, streams have poured into fairytale forests, springs and volatile marshes dot the landscape, the wildlife is more diverse than anywhere else in Europe. The film is the story of Hungary's wild waters...

A new Hungarian nature film, released to cinemas with the recommendation of WWF Hungary, presents the most unique aquatic and near-aquatic communities in Hungary, with spectacular visuals. The film made its debut in front of a professional audience at the Gödöllő International Nature Film Festival, where Zoltán Fehér, the director-cinematographer of the film was awarded the Documentary Cinematography Prize at the 3rd László Kovács and Vilmos Zsigmond Cinematography Competition. In Hungary, it was released in cinemas from 3 June this year by Pannonia Entertainment.

Boys from Paul Street (color, Hungarian-American coproduction, 1968)

Date: 22 August, 2-4pm
Location: Palm House

Ferenc Molnár's 1907 youth novel has been translated into more than 30 languages and has become compulsory reading in many countries, including Estonia. It has been made into film five times, first in 1917 and then in 1924, and has been adapted for Hollywood (Frank Borzage: No Greater Glory, 1934) and Italy, but Zoltán Fábri's adaptation is still considered the benchmark.

The film will be screened with Estonian subtitles in cooperation with the National Film Institute - Film Archive. See the "modern" trailer of the film here:

When I Was Dead (burlesque in one act)

Date: 18 August, 5-6.15pm
Place: Palm House

What can a man do when he loves his wife but his cranky mother-in-law is sucking the air out of him? The obvious thing to do is to pretend to be dead and then go to his own house disguised as a butler to set things right... This is the basic setting of Ernst Lubitsch's 1916 silent film, which was described by critics of the time as "irresistibly funny", but was lost in World War I and only found again in 1994.

Using the film's unashamed plot, expressive visuals and a burlesque acting technique that is largely unknown today, internationally acclaimed director Diego de Brea has staged an unusual comedy at Studio K. The aim is to expose the mannerisms of civilised man and the taboos behind them, with the help of the company's male actors, who are both prima donnas and amorosos.
