The Embassy of Hungary in Copenhagen erected a memorial stone in Lønborg to pay tribute to the Hungarian soldiers deployed to the Kingdom of Denmark during World War II.
In the last weeks of World War II, 12 000 Hungarian soldiers were deployed to Denmark. The Germans intended to send the troops into combat, but in the end, their plan failed. Humanity, affection and friendship triumphed over hate and hostility.
On 1945’s Good Friday, an officer of the Hungarian troops requested the parish priest of Lønborg to deliver an Easter service for the soldiers, and the priest agreed. As it stands today on the memorial stone: the Danes noticed and cherished the human behind the enemy’s uniform.
In honour of the 1945 Easter celebration, the memorial was unveiled together with the parish of Lønborg on Good Friday, 15 April 2022, in the garden of Tarm Kirke in Lønborg.
