A collaborative effort between the Liszt Institute in Moscow and the Indian Cultural Centre in Russia culminated in the launch of a graphic novel showcasing the life and artistic journey of Amrita Sher-Gil. The event took place at the Embassy of India in Moscow and garnered significant interest. Notable attendees included the ambassadors of India and Hungary. The occasion, held on November 8, 2023, featured a captivating program of music, dance, and gastronomy.
The publication, released in commemoration of Amrita Sher-Gil's 110th birth anniversary, offers an engaging and educational glimpse into the remarkable life of the Indian-Hungarian painter and the art world of the twentieth century. By celebrating the diverse and captivating realms of Hungarian and Indian culture, the book serves as a testament to the burgeoning friendship between these two nations. During the launch ceremony, Ambassador Konkoly Norbert and Ambassador Pavan Kapoor delivered welcoming addresses. In his speech, Norbert Konkoly emphasized that „The book we are launching today is not just about Amrita Sher- Gil. It’s also fill a gap in our knowledge of Hungarian and Indian art, as well as women's art in the twentieth century.” The ambassador further highlighted the deliberate choice of the comic book format, aiming to avoid dry facts and excessive cultural analysis.
Following the welcoming speeches, Kozlov Sándor, Director of the Institute in Moscow, and graphic designer Elnara Rasulova provided insights into the visual world depicted in the publication. Further enhancing the promotion of Hungarian music culture, cimbalom player Yekaterina Anohina and violinist Marina Sigalova performed compositions by Ligeti György and Matuz István. The audience was treated to a vibrant dance performance and a concert, offering a captivating glimpse into Indian culture. The reception that followed the event was a resounding success, featuring specialities of Indian cuisine, Hungarian desserts, and wines.
The publication received support from Richter Gedeon Russia and was published by AST Publishing House in Moscow.
