Szöuli falfestmény
A huge mural illustrates a Rubik's cube and the face of Ernő Rubik on the busy building in the South Korean capital from October 2023. The work organised by the Liszt Institute Seoul, celebrates the 50th anniversary of the cube's birth next year and the 80th anniversary of Ernő Rubik's birth. The large-scale work was co-produced and co-funded by Korea and Hungary.
The nearly 800 square metre mural is located in Gangnam, the central business district of Seoul, opposite the city's busiest shopping and convention centre. The artwork underlines the fact that the brand which is known all over the world and particularly popular in South Korea, is a Hungarian invention. The Rubik's Cube's popularity in South Korea is illustrated by the fact that the 2023 Rubik's Cube World Championship in Songdo was attended by 1,200 competitors and more than 2,000 visitors. The Rubik's Cube has been purchased by nearly 350 million people worldwide, making it the most popular game on the planet.
The artwork was created jointly by Neopaint of Hungary and the South Korean art group The Gream based on designs by Neopaint. The Hungarian mural painting team has previously created a Rubik's themed artwork in Budapest. The Gream from South Korea, the most popular street art group in the country, has also entered the Guinness Book of World Records for the largest mural ever created on such a large scale.
More than 60% of the project's budget was funded by the Korean government and nearly 20% by the National Cultural Fund. The project was supported in principle by the Hyundai Group, the Gangnam District Mayor's Office and Spin Master, the US Rubik's brand owner.
The Rubik's Mural has been very popular with the Seoul public after the first days of the project. Many people are taking pictures with it, and hundreds of thousands of people a day will see the decorative painting, which promotes Hungarian creativity.
