For the second time, the Hungarian theatre festival Bukfest was held between 27 September and 2 October at one of Bucharest's most important theatres, the Odeon. The theatre festival presented seven plays performed by Hungarian and mainly Transylvanian theatres. The event was organised by the Association of Hungarian Theatres (Maszín) and the Liszt Institute Bucharest.
Minority theatres are less visible on the Romanian cultural map, so the festival aimed to present a representative selection of recent productions to critics and audiences in Bucharest.
The programme featured productions that in many cases showcase the collaboration with the Romanian theatre world: the Tomcsa Sándor Theatre in Odorheiu Secuiesc presented Exit, a play by Matei Vișniec, the best-known author of Romanian contemporary drama and a respected figure in the international theatre world. The company also performed Luigi Pirandello's In Search of an Author with Six Characters. The Szigliget Theatre in Oradea staged the play Magyarosaurus Dacus, written and directed by Gianina Cărbunariu. The Csík Theatre brought the production Fiddler on the Roof directed by Erwin Șimșesohn, a native from Piatra Neamț. One of the most important Romanian theatre directors, Andrei Șerban from the Harag György Company of the Northern Theatre in Satu Mare came to the Romanian capital with My Fair Lady. The Csiky Gergely Hungarian State Theatre in Timisoara presented Caravaggio by Transylvanian András Visky. The seventh performance was an entirely Hungarian dance theatre production. Boris Vian's The Schmürz was performed by the Szigligeti Theatre - Oradea Dance Company.
The event was a great success, with a great interest in all the performances of Bukfest. For non-Hungarian-speaking audiences, the performances were subtitled in Romanian and English. The festival organised in cooperation with the Romanian Theatre Association (UNITER), was supported by the Office for Interethnic Relations, the Communitas Foundation and the Bethlen Gábor Fund Management Ltd.
