Contemporary Hungarian Artists in Rome: Visual Arts and Literature in the Spotlight

Exciting cultural programs awaited those interested in the Italian capital, organized by the Collegium Hungaricum in Rome. The spotlight was on Marcell Jankovics' exhibition titled "Faith, Hope, Animation", the "Szőnyi’s Roman Years" exhibition, held to commemorate the 130th anniversary of the birth of István Szőnyi, as well as the "Borderless TAPESTRY | ART from a Female Perspective" showcase. The series of events was enriched by a highly successful literary event: the Italian-language translation of Miklós Mészöly's novel, titled "The Death of an Athlete" was presented to the Roman audience.

On January 16, within the walls of the Palazzo della Cancelleria in Rome the "Faith, Hope, Animation" exhibition by Marcell Jaakovics was opened, which showcases the legendary animation director's body of work. At the private reception, Eduard Habsburg-Lotharingia, Hungary's ambassador to the Holy See, gave a welcoming speech, followed by remarks from Éva Rubovszky, the widow of Marcell Jankovics, Mons. Jan Maria Chun Yean Choong, Hungary's representative at the Vatican Secretariat of State, and János Szász, Ministerial Commissioner. Animation director Enzo D’Alò, as well as painter and writer György Szemadám also shared their thoughts on the master’s works. The musical backdrop was provided by folk music performances from Zsófia Sára Bíró and Andor Tóth. The exhibition is open to the public at the Hungarian Academy in Rome until February 5.

After Torino, the Italian-language translation of Miklós Mészöly's novel "The Death of an Athlete" was presented in Rome with great interest on January 16 at the Biblioteca Europea, as part of the EUNIC "Europa in circolo" program series. Dr. Edit Rózsavölgyi, a Hungarian studies expert, analyzed the novel's cultural and social background, while the translator of the work, Mariarosaria Sciglitano, highlighted the novel’s relevance and literary value. Italian author Silvio Perrella emphasized the universal message of the book. The event was organized in collaboration with the Hopefulmonster publishing house and the Biblioteca Europea.

On the occasion of the 130th anniversary of István Szőnyi's birth, the Collegium Hungaricum in Rome is commemorating the renowned Hungarian painter with an exhibition titled "Szőnyi’s Roman Years" from November 28, 2024, to February 28, 2025. The exhibition provides a glimpse into the artist's creative period in Rome, showcasing etchings, pen drawings, gouache and tempera paintings. The exhibition is realized in collaboration with the Municipality of Zebegény, which is the provider of the Szőnyi István Memorial Museum

On December 6, an extraordinary tapestry exhibition titled "Borderless TAPESTRY | ART from a Female Perspective" opened at the Hungarian Academy in Rome. At the opening, Dr. Krisztina Lantos, director of the institute, and Zoltán Rátóti, vice-president of the Hungarian Academy of Arts, welcomed the guests, then the displayed works were introduced by curator Márton Keppel and Barbara Pavan, a leading authority in Italian textile art. The members of the The Association of Hungarian Tapestry Artists successfully represents contemporary female artists. More than half of the works exhibited had debuted at this year’s VIII International Textile Art Triennale, whose theme was Needle-Edge-Border, a motif visible in many of the pieces on display. The exhibition is open to the public until the end of February.
