Commemorating György Klapka in Geneva

On September 26, 2025, the Hungarian Embassy in Bern organized a commemorative event in Geneva featuring a historical symposium in honour of György Klapka. Klapka, a general during the Hungarian War of Independence of 1848–49, acquired Swiss citizenship 170 years ago and later served as a member of the Grand Council of Geneva from 1856 onward.

The historical symposium and accompanying reception took place at Villa Dufour. The event began with welcome remarks by Ambassador Dr. József Czukor and András Dékány, president of the Hungarian Association in Geneva. Gábor Erdődy – former ambassador to Bonn and the Vatican, and retired Vice-Rector of Eötvös Loránd University – then delivered a lecture on Klapka’s role in the War of Independence and his diplomatic activities in exile. Gabriel Barrilier, former president of the Grand Council of Geneva, also addressed the audience.

The commemoration featured musical performances by the students of Kodály Studio and a poetry recital by Margit Lukrécia Miskolczi, president of the Hungarian Cultural Center in Geneva.
