125th Birth Anniversary of Sándor Márai, the Most Faithful Hungarian Citizen of Košice

The world-renowned writer's birthday is traditionally celebrated at the statue erected in his honour in the square named after him, with the participation of the Hungarian community of his hometown and the city of Košice.

On April 11, 2025, a series of events commemorated the 125th anniversary of Sándor Márai's birth in Košice. The events were organized by the Museum of Hungarian Culture in Slovakia, the Sándor Márai Memorial Exhibition, the Košice City Committee of Csemadok, the city of Košice, and the Liszt Institute in Bratislava, with the cooperation of the Hungarian Consulate General in Košice and other organizations.

On the anniversary, the Sándor Márai Memorial Exhibition received a new creation: a gypsum copy of a bust of Sándor Márai by sculptor Miklós Kocsis, donated to the exhibition by Dr. Gábor B. Szabó, a lawyer from Budapest. The work is a copy of the bronze statue erected on the seaside promenade of Salerno, Italy.

At the commemorative ceremony and wreath-laying at the Márai statue in Košice, Mayor Jaroslav Polaček and Dr. Ágota Hetey, Consul General of Hungary in Košice, praised the writer's significance concerning Košice, the Hungarian community of the city, and Hungarian literature.

The commemorations were concluded with one of the pieces from the Márai Evening series performed by actor István Hirtling, literary historian Tibor Mészáros, and cimbalom artist Bálint Tárkány-Kovács at the Márai Studio.
