Royal Tokaji was founded in 1990 with the aim of bringing the wines of Tokaj back to international fame. They are at the forefront of Tokaji’s renaissance. A group of 62 vineyard owners came together with overseas investors led by Hugh Johnson, the noted British author and wine historian. From the outset their goal has been to revive and bring back to international acclaim the wines of one of history’s most renowned wine regions.

Of their more than 100 hectares of vineyards 57 hectares are situated in three First Growths (Szt. Tamás, Nyulászó and Betsek) and the Great First Growth of Mézes Mály. These vineyards have been considered to be among the greatest in the region since the early 18th century.

The Royal Tokaji portfolio includes dry Furmint, dry Háslevelű, dry Yellow Muscat, Late Harvest, 5 and 6 puttonyos aszú blends and single vineyard wines and very limited quantities of Essencia. The wines are made in the traditional manner, with greater extraction and longer barrel-aging in the 600 year old cellars.

The 13th century cellars provide the perfect environment for ageing the wines. The potential lifespan of some of these wines can be measured in centuries rather than mere decades.

While inspired by the incomparable history of this unique region they are committed to a continual quest for improvement. In 2010 a new trailblazing winery was completed giving their winemakers access to the very best technology and equipment which would be the envy of our forefathers.

Royal Tokaji remains in private ownership and their wines are exported to over 30 countries.

They have received over 100 international awards and are regularly named as one of the finest wineries in the world. Royal Tokaji is one of a select group to be named in the World’s Top 100 Wineries more times by Wine & Spirits Magazine. According to Drinks International, Royal Tokaji is one of the Most Admired Wine Brand in the World. Their wines are to be found in the cellars of some of the most discerning collectors and on the lists of the most fêted restaurants.

The presentation and wine tasting will be led by Zoltán Kovács, director of the winery. He has a passion for vines and the wines they produce. Originally from Transylvania – historically part of Hungary – Zoltán has spent the past 20 years in the Tokaj region leading the renaissance of its legendary wines.
At Royal Tokaji he combines his respect for the incomparable tradition of the region with an understanding of the latest winemaking techniques to create the wines of Royal Tokaji, internationally recognised as one of the world’s finest producers.
