“Csodaszarvas, Turul, Bányarém, Markoláb, Garabonciás, or Prikulics. Iconic figures from Hungarian fairy tales and legends and scary stories our great-grandparents used to frighten misbehaving children. The Bestiarium Hungaricum collects these beings, attempting for the first time to overview the relevant traditions of Hungarian folk culture, displaying its most characteristic segments. The album’s 31 chapters each present a unique world, a folk-poetry universe interwoven with beliefs. The beings of Hungarian folklore are depicted through Gyula Németh’s colorful graphics, István P. Szathmáry’s black-and-white linocuts, and Zoltán Magyar’s ethnographic and cultural-historical descriptions. The Bestiarium Hungaricum becomes truly special through this symbiosis of image and text, these two cultural approaches.”
