Presentation of Dr. Katalin Baráth
The Implantation of the Global Genres of Mass Culture in Hungary in the Early 20th Century

The aim of the presentation is to establish the chronology of the implantation of new forms Western entertainment in the existing order of recreation in Hungary, using the examples of dance music called jazz, cinema and football.

It was on the eve of World War I that the new forms reached a „critical mass” and thus started to institutionalize. The actors of Hungarian entertainment industry joined then actively the international circulation of new genres, the emerging cultural globalization. The early 1920s were in this respect also an especially turbulent period: new forms of entertainment, led by dance music of Afro-American roots, conquered the masses with increasing speed, causing moral panic in certain circles. Although the need for regulation appeared earlier, it was in this decade that the authorities became aware of the opportunities of shaping the image of nation and country alike provided by the new mass culture.

From the late 1920s on, while the new genres of mass culture became solidly embedded in the practice of popular recreation, this did not involve the disappearance of traditional forms of entertainment, but rather resulted in their simultaneous existence.

The course ‘History of Globalisation in Hungary in Comparative Perspective’ offers a comprehensive overview of the influences and effects of globalisation in the history of Hungary. From the Habsburg monarchy through the interwar period to the socialist period, students will explore the different phases of globalisation in this region.
