Photographic reflections to the Bauhaus and its Hungarian actors

ART EXHIBITION AND PROGRAM

Numerous cultural events around the world commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Bauhaus and pay homage to the artistic movement’s powerful impact on today’s art scene. In spring 2019 a special contemporary photography program has been created to honor the Bauhaus and its Hungarian actors.

A great number of Hungarian artists contributed significantly to the revolutionary importance of the Bauhaus. Beyond one of the most prominent teachers at the school, László Moholy-Nagy, and the world renown architect and designer Marcell Breuer, other artists of Hungarian origin also made an important impact on the foundation and vision of the Bauhaus, such as Otti Berger, Hugó Johan, Farkas Molnár, Henrik Stefán, Andor Weininger and others.

The BAUHAUS CONTEMPORARY program and exhibition is dedicated to the Bauhaus, and more specifically to the work and contributions of Hungarian creators. In contrast to „traditional” commemorations, this collection of artworks by contemporary Hungarian artists attempts to highlight that the Bauhaus as a school, vision, theme and a source of visual inspiration is still a living tradition in the Hungarian art scene.

Selected by a jury of industry professionals, the images of 15 outstanding photographers were chosen to participate in BAUHAUS CONTEMPORARY through an invitation-only competition. The members of the jury were Csaba Káel, Chairman of the Operative Body of the Budapest Spring Festival and CEO of Müpa , Gábor Máté, Head of the Photography Department at the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design Budapest and Zsolt Petrányi, Head of the Contemporary Collection at the Hungarian National Gallery. Represented in the program are artists from all generations of the contemporary photography scene in Hungary.

Employing the tools of contemporary photography, the exhibited works evoke the spirit of the Bauhaus and the Hungarian artists involved in defining it. Be it through the creative experiments inspired by László Moholy-Nagy’s photograms, the examination of the interplay between architecture and photography, or an exploration of the characteristic geometric forms of the movement, the BAUHAUS CONTEMPORARY photo collection stunningly presents the living relationship between a century-old creative milieu and the contemporary Hungarian art community.

BAUHAUS CONTEMPORARY debuted as part of the 2019 Budapest Spring Festival and besides travelling to several Hungarian cities the exhibition has already been presented in Basel, as a satellite program of Art Basel, at Art Photo Budapest, the only international photography fair in Central and Eastern Europe, at the Hungarian Academy in Rome and in Barcelona during the Hungarian Cultural Days.

The current online edition of BAUHAUS CONTEMPORARY program is presented to you by EDGE Communications and the Hungarian Cultural Center New York.
