Theatre Festival Marks Anniversaries

The Hungarian city of Szeged’s Thealter International Theatre Festival is marking two important anniversaries this year: its own 20th anniversary and the 70th birthday of the Kossuth Prize-winning poet Ottó Tolnai.

Plays inspired by Tolnai’s work will be at the centre of this year’s Thealter, but the programme will also feature a rap theatre, a piece with artists as actors and a washing machine concert, said festival artistic director József Balog.

Artists from Romania, Russia, Germany, Poland, Serbia, Slovenia and Spain will join the Hungarians at the festival.

The festival will start on Friday with an interpretation of Tolnai’s The Kishinov Rose or “Manhattan” by the Kosztolányi Theatre’s Urbán Company. Orpheus, by the Janus University of Pécs and the University Theatre of Szeged, will show on Saturday, as will performances by Béla Pintér and Company and Budapest’s Living Picture Company.

Budapest’s GoBe Company will bring a poem from Tolnai’s Dance Lexicon to the stage on Sunday.

The Szeged Focus Workshop will show Happy Hour on Monday, and Harlequin, a Russian-German coproduction, is on the programme for Tuesday.

The Arad Chamber Theatre from Romania will perform a piece by Raymond Cousse on Wednesday. The venue for the show will be unique: a prison. The troupe will team up with the Third Theatre of Pécs to show Matei Visniec’s Knights in the Window in the evening.

The Metanoia Artopedia group of Szeged will show Thirteen Months (Under House Arrest) and the Andaxínház will perform Nothing To Fear on Thursday.

On Friday, Zsuzsanna Bicskei will bring a piece from Romania to the stage.

Yvette Bozsik Company (Judit Horvath's take)

The Yvette Bozsik Company and Metanoia Artopedia will perform on Saturday.

The festival will close on Sunday with a dance and musical tribute to Tolnai by Dénes Döbrei from France and Félix Lajkó from Seriba.
