Mihály Dresch, who has defined Hungary’s ethno-jazz scene for years, brought
Mátyas Szandai, a member of his usual quartet, with him, and the formation was rounded out by the Americans
Lafayette Gilchrist and
Hamid Drake, both of whom were returning to Mediawave.
After the break, Drake and Szandai formed a trio with Viktor Tóth, who at just 33 shines with maturity.

At a concert the next day, Szandai showed yet a different side, playing with
Michael Schiefel’s Special quartet, with
Carsten Daerr on piano and fellow Dresch Quartet member
Miklós Lukács on cimbalom. Schiefel is no stranger to Mediawave, having played as part of the Thärichen Tentett avant-garde jazz parade.
Recording company Budapest Music Center aims to make discs of Dresch’s and Schiefel’s collaborations at the festival.
